Jelly Roll and ERNEST were friends long before they co-wrote Jelly’s smash “Son Of A Sinner.” That friendship has become the source of a song, with the help of country superstar Luke Bryan.
The story was told as Jelly and ERNEST were guests on the “This Past Weekend” podcast with Theo Von. Jelly and Ern relayed the story of how Luke was fascinated by their long friendship, and insisted that ERNEST write a song about it. This conversation was being held as the two were drunkenly “golfing” – which is to say, driving aimlessly around the course in their golf cart. While they did, they started trading lines and a song started forming. The two would make some progress – and then FaceTime JR, who was sincerely helping the two until he realized they were day drinking and golfing, and work just kind of happened. As Jelly tells it, “These (fine fellows) are writing a song on the golf course right now. Ernest starts laughing and adds: “For sure, over FaceTime…with no guitars.”
Believe it or not, a real song came of it, though it’s unclear if or when the public will ever hear an official version. According to ERNEST, the lyrics go:
“I went to college he went to jail,
One was a dorm room, one was a cell
Who came out on top?
Hell, it’s hard to tell
I went to college; he went to jail.”
You can check out the entire episode of the podcast here, but be warned – there’s a LOT of NSFW language. It’s Jelly Roll, after all.
