On Sunday (Feb. 19) season 21 of American Idol premiered, bringing in a slew of new talent and promising artist. Some contestants brought their A-game performing original songs, while others showed their impressive vocals.
Lyric Medeiros of Honolulu, Hawaii, did something to make herslef stand out to win over the judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. Medeiros gave the judges Hawaiian Leis before the started to perform.
Medeiros started performing Kelsea Ballerini’s “Love Me Like You Mean It” and Katy Perry stopped the audition to ask why she “flew 10 hours to be cute and safe.”
Thankfully, the judges allowed Medeiros to perform another song. So, she picked Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats.” Judges once again stopped her and Luke Bryan says, “look this is gonna be really challenging for you. Have you ever made an ugly face in your life?” Katy Perry walks over to Medeiros to help pull her out of her shell.
Medeiros is no stranger to music as she is the daughter of ’80s pop star Glenn Medeiros. He is most known for his global hit, “Nothings Gonna Change My Love for You.” Although her dad was a pop star, Medeiros says that she has always been drawn to country music.
Judges Katy Perry and Lionel Richie gave her a yes, but Luke Bryan gave her a no. Advancing Medeiros to the next round.
